The Women's Leadership Academy (WLA) at Cape Elizabeth High School embarked on an unforgettable expedition to Bradbury Mountain and Maine Forest Yurts in Durham, Maine. Under the light of a near-full moon, 18 students hiked to the summit, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills through challenges like scavenger hunts and a Survivor-like obstacle course.
This semester-long course empowers young women to develop their leadership skills, vision, and voice. Through outdoor experiential activities, students learn to work together, step out of their comfort zones, and build confidence. This year's trip showcased their adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected travel arrangements and logistical challenges.
WLA teachers Elaine Brassard and Carolyn Young, along with chaperones Eileen Hetrick and Colleen Currier, created a supportive environment for students to grow and lead. As WLA teacher Elaine Brassard noted, "Outdoor experiential activities provide a great opportunity for students to learn, to work together and lead in many different ways."
The WLA program is a shining example of how empowering young women can have a lasting impact. By providing a welcoming and encouraging space, these students are becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
